Marketing comic books

Making IT topics engaging, informative, and fun—one panel at a time.

Client: Microsoft, 2015-2017

Agency: Indigo Slate

As a kid who obsessively collected Marvel Comics, it was a dream come true to work on these IT-oriented comic books for Microsoft.

The Office IT Pro Adventures and Nano Man series both distilled essential IT topics into entertaining, bite-sized stories. I worked with our artists, art director, and marketing team to lock down goals and messaging for each issue, and then tag-teamed with our alpha comic artist to craft the plot, characters, and dialogue.

Spanning 8 issues, over 15,000 print copies of IT Pro Adventures were distributed at conferences and other Microsoft events, and many more downloaded online.

New technologies call for new heroes. I worked closely with our artist and marketing Subject Matter Expert to create the world of Nano Man for the rollout of the new Microsoft Windows Server 2016.

I helped concept the characters and plot, and worked with SMEs to ensure technical accuracy. Originally a one-off comic book, Nano Man was so popular that he became featured in a second issue, infographics, stickers, posters, and a mixed-reality experience for HoloLens, and was translated for use in several Tier-1 markets.

I wrote dialogue for the comic books, and all copy for the additional assets.
